I found several shots of the SD38-2 Slug Set 2975, 2972 with Slug 1002 working the West Colton Hump in November 1977.

Oh yeah, wow, thanks for posting these awesome pics! The last photo is especially rare showing the raised rear platform of the SD38-2 and the slug-unit cable connections. In my opinion, the SP WC slug hump unit sets were absolutely the best locomotive switching consist ever, and not just for SP, but out of all other Class 1 railroads combined. In retrospect, to sum up in one word of an SP West Colton hump set with a slug is a study in "Synchronicity"!

Nice shots of something I took for "granted"... IIRC, they got a fresh coat of paint about 1980? They really looked sharp after Earl Scheib got done with them... "No up's, no extra's"! (Tho he did do the wheel wells and the door jambs!)

Check out the containers in the top pic...

A quaint view: 40' containers on 89' flats, mixed in with manifest.
I suspect that's a rare ocurrence these days, if at all.

Awesome views!

Good memories. Used to watch the slugs while sittin on the Sierra Ave overpass in Fontana back in 79'-81' when I was a kid.
