Nostalgia & History > C&O Heavyweight Pullmans in 1950--A RosterDate: 07/16/06 12:12 C&O Heavyweight Pullmans in 1950--A Roster Author: aehouse I've been doing research into the C&O's 1946 order with Pullman Standard for reequipping its entire fleet of passenger cars with lightweight equipment. As you C&O scholars know, the order was subsequently downsized when the C&O re-thought the scope of its postwar passenger fleet needs, with some of the cars never being built, and others completed but taken over by roads including the B&O, IC, D&RGW, and NYC. Part of my work has been to compare the C&O heavyweight sleeping car fleet's capacities with the capacities of the cars C&O ordered as replacements. That's too much to get into here, but for those of you interested, here's a list (with interior configurations) of the 66 C&O heavyweight sleeping car car fleet as it existed in 1950--when the lightweight cars that C&O retained on order were finally delivered.
The C&OHS convention is this week in Frankfort, KY, and Jesse Smith will be giving a detailed presentation concerning C&O's heavyweight sleepers. Thanks to Jesse for correcting some errors that appeared when I first transcribed this list from an official 1950 Pullman Company roster of cars. Art House -------------------------------------- 1. The Pullman Library at the Illinois Railway Museum has the original specifications for the ordered cars (likely as well - the HW cars). I know as I researched the D&RGW side of the order, I also obtained the side views and the underbody layout. I you'd like to talk about the specifics about these things, you can contact me at my off list email drgw at drgw.org. |
