Nostalgia & History > SP ALCO S-4 #1474 at Oakland, February 1965Date: 11/04/06 23:58 SP ALCO S-4 #1474 at Oakland, February 1965 Author: drew1946 SP #1474, an ALCO S-4 is at work in Oakland, February of 1965. Later re-numbered to 1802, the little ALCO would avoid the scrapyard and today is operational at Orange Empire back in stripes with its original number.
In the far left background are what appear to be Railway Express Agency (REA) containers on some kind of flat car. Those, like everything else in this photo except the #1474, have all been scrapped. Date: 11/05/06 09:44 Re: SP ALCO S-4 #1474 at Oakland, February 1965 Author: Pullman REA used those containers on trains 21 and 22.
Great book from the SPT&HS, "Ghost Trains of the SP's Overland Route" by Randall E Cape and Robert G McKeen. http://www.sphts.org/Pages/Books.html Date: 11/05/06 10:44 Re: SP ALCO S-4 #1474 at Oakland, February 1965 Author: ATSF429 As a side note SP1474 is one of the locomotives Orange Empire Railway Museum uses in their Run 1 program. Run 1 is their version of rent a loco for an hour. I hear rumors they maybe offering their VC-2 2-6-2 steamer next year for and occasional Run 1.

We finally acquired the correct fuel filters for this engine after an exhaustive search. Canada Allied Diesel to the rescue! 1774 is one of our stalwarts!
