A Nation shaken to its' knees......

For those of us old enough to have been witness to this terrible,
horrific event, today, forty-three years ago, this country was brought
to its' knees.

Years later, much has been written, debates still linger over
conspiracies, and movies have been made.

In Dallas, Texas, while travelling in an a motorcade, President John
Fitzgerald Kennedy was assassinated.

You could sense the shock. The country seemingly paused, as it
listened to the news. People of all faiths prayed. Nothing could be be
done.

The country cried. The world cried. Life was never quite the same
afterwards.

Later that day, a photographer living in the vicinity of Chillicothe,
Illinois, likely stunned by the events of the day, turned to his hobby
for solace. His viewfinder framed the work-a-day Santa Fe - merely
another brace of spic and span GP-20's on a westbound freight.

The wave through the door window by the fireman or head brakeman, was
not unusual for the time; in this instance though, it implied the
compassion that we once held for our fellow man, when that man felt
pain......

Thanks for the reminder...it has been said that everyone who is old enough can remember just where they were & what they were doing at that time. I was in a H.S. study hall talking with a classmate when the announcement came over the loudspeaker.

Most of babyboomers will remember two events and where we were that day: JFK's assination and 911. Hopefully, we won't have anything else like that in our lifetime.

I was in the fifth grade when JFK was assasinated and I remember my teacher and the entire class crying when his death was announced. As for who killed JFK, I refuse to believe that it was Lee Harvey Oswald shooting from a upper floor window of the book depository building. There is now a sizable amount of evidence to support the theory or fact that JFK was killed from shots being fired on his motorcade at ground level and from the grassy knoll next to Dealy Plaza. Oswald was a designated "fall guy".

I think there is enough information (evidence) and wittnesses now to support the grassy knoll shooting. I have a set of videos about the JFK assassination that detail this.

I was called to work an afternoon switcher at River Station aka the 'Links' on SP's Los Angeles division. The usual banter and repartee between switchmen and enginemen was totally absent. Just an eerie quiet, going about our chores. Not seen before by myself....hopefully never to be seen again by any of us.

A conductor friend of mine has a Wabash train order similar to that for a train he was on at the time.

"Eich bein eine Berliner" translated "I am a Berliner".

I was in my freshman English class at Colton High School when the Assistant Principle came on the intercom and said, "May I have your attention please?" Of course everybody said 'no.' But when he told us that JFK had been shot in Dallas, you could hear a pin drop in that class. It was an event I'll never forget.

I really enjoyed JFK's quote about asking what you can do for your country. That was made on January 20, 1961 at his inaugural in Washington DC.

TCS - humour for a pre-turkeyday (oh and, I was not present at that time - jelly donut or otherwise)

I was just leaving to pick up our son at nursery school . I recall standing in the kitchen and thinking "no, this isn't true". Later that weekend we were painting that kitchen while the tv droned on and the tears were streaming down my face. We were not and are not Kennedy people, but that didn't matter.

Yes, I knew that, of course; that was why I wrote it the way he said it. Actually, it wasn't the gender of the article etc. that was the problem. He should have omitted it all together as in: "Ich bin Berliner" like "Ich bin Deutscher" oder "Ich bin Amerikaner". It is interesting to note that in Berlin the Ich is pronounced like "Ik" and where my mother's family is from it is pronounced like "Ish". We make fun of those that say it like "ik" by musing "Ika, Ika". (I'm spelling it phonetically.) But anyway the Germans understood what Jack meant and they really thought the world of him much differently than they think of George Busch. JFK had his problems like being a skirt chaser and coming from a powerful, wealthy, corrupt family but he was a good politician. Clinton was a good politician too.
