On Thanksgiving weekend '76, a westbound WP train was just about to enter WP's Stockton, CA, yard.

The WP U23Bs were a nice unit to photograph,in later years
they smoked much like an ALCO.As far as the crewmen go very cramped
cab,as the had dual cab controls,bad heaters.Had they not cancelled
the order for GP38-2s in 1972 UP would possibly still be running them.
As most fans know the U23s were traded in to GE shortly after the UP
merger,and were rebuilt into Super7s stll equipped with blomberg-trucks.

At least they had EMD style controls; the WP U30Bs, which were garbage, had strange ones. Did you know, at one point WP put out instructions, if possible, to only use EMD as lead units! I still remember the hard transitions a consist of GEs would make.

WP #2260 became MGA B23-s7 #2308 and after passing thru CR and NS ended up as the Arkansas- Oklahoma #4098 and is still there as far as I know. GEs don't usually have this kind of life expectancy.

WP had U23B's???  I thought they only had U30B's.

And dual controls, for running long hood????  Wow.
