Nostalgia & History > SP 3201 with San Joaquin Daylite and Truckee LimitedDate: 11/28/06 23:35 SP 3201 with San Joaquin Daylite and Truckee Limited Author: drew1946 On April 25th 1971, the SP operated its last charter for a fan trip before Amtrak took over the following Saturday. Pacific Locomotive Association was running another of their popular "Truckee Limited" trains but getting out of the Bay Area was not without a hitch. Confusion on the part of the SP crew resulted in the special's passengers at Richmond being passed up and left watching as their train sped by. All was not lost. Immediatly behind the special was #52, The San Joaquin Daylight.
The Daylight picked up the stranded passengers and brought them to Martinez where the Truckee Limited was waiting. With track space limited, the special pulled up the Eastward main toward the Suisun Bay Bridge to allow #52 into the depot. After unloading its passengers, the Daylight, with #3201 in the lead, passed the rear of the Truckee Limited and headed out the Moccoco Line to Tracy. The power on the Daylight was unusual in that the second unit was an F7B, the first time---and only time---I ever saw such a lash up on that train Date: 11/29/06 04:48 Re: SP 3201 with San Joaquin Daylite and Truckee Limite Author: topper drew1946 Wrote:

And it looks like the 3201 just received its M5 in place of its crappy P3. Date: 11/29/06 07:37 Re: SP 3201 with San Joaquin Daylite and Truckee Limite Author: WAF That month ( April) they were using a B unit on 98/99 too as 52's power would be 99's power out of LA and when it returned to LA the next day on 98, it would go back ( generally) on 51 to Oakland. The last 51 had two B,B's.
Martinez was very busy that day as #11 was leaving as we pulled in for our little "shuffle" with 52. 52 also had a lounge car, which was a nice jesture from the SP. Date: 11/30/06 21:26 Re: SP 3201 with San Joaquin Daylite and Truckee Limite Author: dmaffei Drew,
Your SP photo's continue to WOW me. Thanks for posting this kinda stuff. Never seen a photo of yellowing lettering like that. Don't think the color is off to bad in that pic. Those M5's were great hooters. Loved to listen to them on the peninsula commutes when the hogger knew how to "Pull the cord" as Carl Ragosa would say....Thanks for the memories. This particular slide fell victim to carpet beetle larvae (they eat the emusion). Usually they would attack just on the margins but, in this case the prefererred the center. Now I suppose PETA or some other group would flame me killing off the little buggers, but I did.
