CF7 delivery day on the Big Trees & Pacific
Author: PullmanPorter

On Oct. 10, 1986 the Big Trees & Pacific received their first CF7 to use on the former SP Olympia line. Santa Fe 2641 left Watsonville Junction as the trailing unit on the Santa Cruz Local. Upon arrival in Santa Cruz, the crew uncoupled the 2641 and used it to switch the yard. Maybe they wanted to save SP some fuel or perhaps just make switching easier by using a low-nose unit. Later in the day a BT&P crew showed up and ran the unit light up to Felton, pictured here on the Powder Creek trestle near Paradise Park.

Thanks for the images. I was on hand on January 28, 1987, the day the second CF7 (ATSF2600) was delivered to Roaring Camp behind SP3883-SP2879-SP3878-SP4318-SP4416. Actually it was the second time the 2600 was delivered as the first time it didn't meet the requirements Roaring Camp and Santa Fe agreed upon, so it was sent back. - Tony J.

Excellent photos Jon. The old yard was pretty big for Santa Cruz in those days.

Thanks for the info, Tony. I wasn't sure when they got their second CF7. The 2641 was brought to Santa Cruz by SP 3382, 3766,4844, and 3838 pictured here on the Capitola trestle.

Yeah, a crew could do some switching in those days. Here's how the yard looked on Sept. 6, 1984, before the depot burned and most of the tracks were pulled out.
