Nostalgia & History > Southern Pacific Daylight TripDate: 12/29/06 08:52 Southern Pacific Daylight Trip Author: RebStout Heres a cool little item that will undoubtedly bring back a lot of memories. Looks like it is dated August 12/14, 1949, from Salinas to Los Angeles.

I've been collecting railroad stuff for years and years, and my sisters are always on the lookout for train stuff when they hit various antique stores...glad you're enjoying some of my collection! I like the "For Your Information" sheet. Dining car---open all day! A news agent? A passenger agent? WOW! And how about those Club Breakfasts.....a whole dollar.

SP knew how to do it right in those days. Those days are gone forever. Date: 12/30/06 03:33 Re: Southern Pacific Daylight Trip Author: derek20la mundo Wrote:

Using the US Department of Labor's inflation calculator (http://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/cpicalc.pl), that $7.50 trip in 1949 would be the same as $63.50 today in 2006. To compare, the fare for a trip on the Coast Starlight for Aug 15, 2007 from Salinas to LA is currently priced at $81. So I guess basically you'd pay about $20 more for a trip thats slower and has fewer amenities. |
