Nostalgia & History > SR 4501 and CB&Q 4960Date: 01/11/07 14:24 SR 4501 and CB&Q 4960 Author: Frisco1522 Digging deeper into the slide trays, we find another shot of SR 4501 EB at Belleville, IL on 6-22-70 (That's what I marked on the mount) on what may be a ferry move back to the east.
Next is 4960 at St. Louis at the Q's Carr St Freighthouse trackage loading for a fantrip to Hannibal Mo in May of '61. Guy in the grey sportcoat and dark slacks is yours truly (when I had hair and a lot less belly) standing next to a pal, Arthur B. Johnson. I'm sure his name is familiar to a lot of engine picture folks. The weather caved in that day, and next shot is at Machens, MO (where the MKT split off and headed for KC) in the rain. The long haired beauty with the nice caboose was destined to be my wife the following March and we're still soldiering on almost 45 years later. Where does the time go? Silver Sky Date: 01/11/07 15:44 Re: SR 4501 and CB&Q 4960 Author: MTMEngineer Neat. Thanks.
As evidenced by the second photo, the Q discouraged, but didn't enforce prohibitions on, riding the leading footboard. Though I worked for the Q, I always felt that Q power lacked grace, and looked rather brutish - sorta like chainsaw art. The GC's reincarnation of the 4960 has somewhat improved her appearance, somehow. Maybe, it's just that ANY steam in 2007 looks good. And, I see two automobiles in the background that also make me somewhat nostalgic. Neither of these two were mine, as I was not in St Louis at the time, but I once owned both a Corvair and a '57 Fairlane 500. Bob Date: 01/11/07 15:56 Re: SR 4501 and CB&Q 4960 Author: Frisco1522 I always liked the Q and agree, some of their engines only a mother could love, but it was a neat RR. It seemed like everywhere you went in IL and the midwest, there was some "Peavine" Q branch wandering about. I stumbled into a little roundhouse and turntable in a residential neighborhood in Ft. Madison, IA by accident as an example.
Add the 6300 2-10-4s to the good looking power. |
