It was Amtrak's first winter on Donner Pass. Not much had changed except for the replacement of SP's SDP45's with FP7's on what were now Amtrak Trains #5 and #6. The San Francisco Zephyr is seen approaching the snow shed complex at Norden in December of 1971.

Great stuff, amazing how clean it is for the amount of snow out there.
Also a good example of how the nose on the F-units allowed a decent photo even with the sun at a bad angle.
This may be just before the Christmas Eve run on Amtrak that's shown on the Chas Smiley DVD, that would have had PhotoBob with a handheld 8mm movie camera hanging out of one of the vestibules during a blizzard, then making it back home for Christmas Dinner, on time in both directions.

That had to be the best time to ride Amtrak with the variety off equipment that was mixed on trains from different railroads. Most of it was in a poor state of repair. Keep'm comin Drew...
