Some DRGW for thtinc41ed's Winter Blahs

Here are a couple from Herington in the DRGW Days:

1) No. 179 going across Broadway St. in Herington on September 30, 1984.
2) No. 179 again at the SSW diamond in Herington by the old Rock Island yard office on January 18, 1986.

Bob,

You were lucky to catch GP30 #3013 in the lead on #179. By 1984 they were very nearly banned from the point of mainline freights across the D&RGW.

They did of course lead local freights from the early 1980's until the mid-1990s. Sure to miss 'em.

You may notice the old maintenance of way bunk house (maybe used for something else when the pic was taken) at the crossing? This was a common method by the railroads MOW Superintendent to keep trouble switches, and track work in good condition. Building still standing, seems to have worked.
