1. The first time I saw UP3985 was inside a fence near the Cheyenne depot.
In 1982 I saw it alive for the first time in Salt Lake City while the city fire
engine was filling the tender.

2. I am still getting used to the camera and I apologize for the poor quality.
The Challenger, without those yellow tenders, made a trip to the next town
toward Provo, starting several brush fires. A seasoned railfan said, "In the
olden days these fires did not happen because frequent steam travels burned
everything near the tracks that burned.."

Great pics! Salt Lake City in 1982 was the first time I saw #3985, too-- I lived (and still live) just a few blocks from where your photos were taken.

Thanks for the great pictures. It is photos like these that make me feel it was all worth it working to restore 3985 back to service and the trip to Sacramento was my reward in 1981. It has been a joy to have been a part of its life through out the years.
