That pic of 9120 in Roseville, hooked up to externals, shows a load test on the transmission with the engine on the 'Firing Line'. The device is an external cooler.

This is likely just after the 1966 rebuilding supervised by KM. It gave a new lease on life to four of the fifteen 'Series' units, correcting most of the cooling and engine problems which plagued the units. We learned that the rebuilding program was scheduled for all 15 units, but SP pulled the plug on the KMs before that could happen. SP 9010, currently being restored at Niles Canyon by the Pacific Locomotive Association, is one of the Final Four rebuilt units.

Pics and story about the KM presence in Roseville (including another view of this same load test process on rebuilt unit 9107) can be found on the PLA's 9010 website:

Also very rare to see SP passenger-pool Fs with icicle bars and black widow paint, since I believe the bars came well after the 1958 switch to Red & Gray. 376 and 6458 are the ones which come to mind.

Actually I don't believe the 376 was ever in the passenger pool. Not sure why it got the icicle breakers.

Used to lead the Overland and COSF over Donner.

Any clues to the GE 44 tonner just to the right of the Krauss on the 'firingline' in Roseville?

Great stuff!

I had always wondered about how 376 got those ice bars. My recollection was that the 6390 series Fs were used as point power for the Donner passenger trains. They did not get the ice bars. 376 was a very odd case
in more ways than one as I have possession of old 8mm movies copied to DVD that shows this locomotive getting a black widow touch up in the Roseville shop in 1966!

John, thanks again for posting these great memories.

Visalia Electric

I think it's Petaluma & Santa Rosa #4. It was sold in 12/1966. Had been Visalia Electric 501, then SP # 1903 before P&SR # 4.
In 1966 Visalia Electric's only 44 ton was # 502 still in service then, happily preserved at Rio Vista Jct.

Thanks Wes and Don for the info on the GE. Had a hunch as to the origins, now confirmed.

And K-M 9010 is slowly returning to life. The first new paint has gone on. See: http://sp9010.ncry.org/frontend2.htm for Howards latest update (bottom of page).

Sort of looks like a Ford Falcon.
