Monument in Eureka, Calif
Author: miralomarail

I picked up a very old copy of "Railroad Modeler" Saturday. There was a photo of a Locomotive Bell mounted on a Monument in Eureka, Calif in a NWP yard, in memory of of a mishap at Scotia Bluff, ca. in 1953. Does anyone have any facts about what happened ? A 3 man crew were killed. Thanks, Tom

Rock slide came down on locomotive on work train working on Scotia Bluffs and swept crew and locomotive into the Eel River.
My information source was MR. C.E. Neal.

It's off of engine 184, wrecked in early 1953. The monument is now at Fortuna.

I thought the last time this came up here, it was NWP #112 in the fatal wreck, later repaired and now at CSRM.
Maybe two wrecks in 1953?
