Some more Espee in L.A.
Author: AJnCorrie

1) A SP local out of Los Nietos ducks under the 605 freeway
2) and crosses the riverbed headed west
3) Before the Alameda Corridor, SP would run Stacks and the Oil Cans through DT Jct...here, a Rio Grande led stack train takes the balloon track headed for the crossing of the Santa Fe at DT Jct.

Thanks for the photos. I used to ride the bike path along the San Gabriel River and went under those tracks hundreds of times in the 80s and 90s.

The bike path provided me with an opportunity to do three of my favorite things at once: ride a bike, watch trains, and look for birds along the river.

AJ,
All great shots! #4 is my favorite though. I worked LNS off and on for many years in the mid 60's through the mid 70's. In fact, my first student trip (3 days) was at LNS with R.E.Coe, the Conductor that got me my job. Along with him, the two brakemen were Floyd Sleva and Jerry Horn. In your photo #4 of LNS was the east end of the yard, even though it was the closest end to San Francisco. I believe later on it was changed to reflect the west end, as it should have been from the time it was built.

Did they originally consider Los Nietos yard to be north (and east) from the S.P. Santa Ana Branch? Therefore the far end was the east end...
Rather than being south (and east) of the old P.E. line to Whittier (making that same spot the "near" and therefore "west" end?
Of course it's much much closer to the P.E. line.
If their reasoning involved the City-of-Industry-to-Studebaker-wye line, it might get even more confusing...

Since LNS is a fairly new yard, I don't really think your analogy applies Scott. I may be wrong, but that is just my opinion.
