Nostalgia & History > Speaking of "old" Chicago...Date: 06/29/11 09:48 Speaking of "old" Chicago... Author: Copy19 There's a lot to see in this picture of the 1948 Chicago Railroad Fair parade...the streetcars, the crowds and the low price for the "star stage revue". JEB Union Pacific Railroad Museum -- still high and dry --so far.

Date: 06/29/11 10:21 Re: Speaking of "old" Chicago... Author: Copy19 Rubber-tired parade unit. The CNW had a rubber-tired version of its first steam locomotive, the Pioneer, in the parade as well called "the dummy". JEB

Stay high and dry! ---jcs Date: 06/29/11 12:24 Re: Speaking of "old" Chicago... Author: garr I believe that is North State Street near Wacker Drive. It has been a while since I worked in Chicago, but the Chicago Theater was located close to our home office at the corner of Wacker and State. As a matter of fact, it looks as if the photographer was close to the intersection.

Jay Date: 06/29/11 14:12 Re: Speaking of "old" Chicago... Author: CShaveRR You're looking south on State, but you aren't that close to Wacker yet. The picture was probably taken from the L station over Lake Street.

Is that not the sign for the Chicago Theater located behind the United Insurance/Unitrin building on the corner of Wacker and State? Of course you have a point about the EL but I could not remember what year that was built. Jay Date: 06/29/11 16:07 Re: Speaking of "old" Chicago... Author: johnw Yup that's definitely the Chicago Theater in the foreground, one of America's greatest movie palaces, now happily restored and used for mainly live performances.

Date: 06/29/11 18:32 Re: Speaking of "old" Chicago... Author: guitarboy cool photo! I owned a condo a few blocks south of here at State and Monroe. Always wondered what it was like back then. Gave up the condo in April due to divorce. ( I got the 2 dogs).
Date: 06/29/11 18:36 "old" Chicago... Author: Bob3985 Having grown up back there, I did walk by the Chicago Theater. But, NO, I did not go see Bing Crosby. Nice photo John. And good to hear that you are holding out on the arc. Did you save two of every locomotive and car?

Author: Clarence The "diesel" is facing north towards Wacker Drive and the river. I agree the photographer was up on the El tracks at whatever station that was. The El dates to about 1890. The Trailways bus station (at least in the 1970's) was on Randolph (the cross street) a bit east of the Chicago Theater. About 10 o'clock bearing from the photographer.

As I said it has been a while since I worked in Chicago--long enough for me to move the Chicago Theater a block or two closer to Wacker. In JohnW's photo the L is visible in the far left edge of the photo. That would be the Lake Street station Carl and Clarence mentioned. Jay Date: 06/30/11 08:50 Re: Speaking of "old" Chicago...
