July 29, 1984. Time to get serious about heading home.

#1-3 But first a couple more trains near Algoma. BN 2712 leads a local heading for Bend.

#4-5 Second out was Amtrak 14 with the 245 leading. Also near Algoma.

#6 The 7446 was caught near Dorris CA.

#7-8 Near Black Butte we caught the 9303 with helper 7437.

#9 The 9303 again.

#10 The Dunsmuir Post Office.

#11 The 7483 south of Dunsmuir.

#12 Right behind the 7483 was the 9239.

#13 Can't remember where the UP 790 was, but we shot it anyway.

#14 The 222 leads a late Amtrak #5 into Roseville.

#15 At Antelope we caught the 7445 waiting to head west.

#16 The 8270 leaving Antelope.

#17 South of Stockton the next day we found the 8956 heading east for the last shot of the trip.

The pic of 8270 reminds me of seeing it on an SP runthrough over the Southern during a childhood visit to Laurel, MS in 1983. While the rest of the family did "family things", they left me at the Southern depot for a few hours. There was a lady working in the depot for Southern, and she told me that the SP train was on the way north, adding "you wouldn't believe it, but those SP engines have AIR CONDITIONERS!". I think this was a feature the depot lacked, and it was most certainly considered quite the novelty on a locomotive (in Mississippi in 1983, at any rate).
