NJ - Ridgefield Park on the NYS&W, New York Central, NY
Author: Lackawanna484

Ridgefield Park is a small town in southern Bergen County NJ. Its station, long diverted from railroad ownership, is a convenient place to watch trains on the busy CSX River Sub between NJ and Albany NY, as well as the adjacent New York Susquehanna & Western.

The station is now for sale. In the past, it has been well maintained and landscaped for Slattery Marketing Company. It's a lovely little building, with a small glass roof dome illuminating the modest main waiting room.

Picture 3, looking northwest from the same position as picture 2. The little forest in the left center is the NYSW end of a one time platform and access to an underground tunnel. The tunnel went under the four New York Central tracks to the station. It's been closed for many years.

The current two tracks are in a slightly different location than the last New York Central tracks due to development of the property and many underground natural gas and communications conduits.

There was a platform and canopy on the west side of the NYS&W that lasted into the late 1990's. Back in the late 80's/early 90's I was involved in some excursions from old Susquehanna Transfer to Warwick, NY that made a station stop here. We cleaned out the weeds and junk and actually used the NYS&W side. We even went so far as to install lights on the canopy due to the dusk arrival on the return trips. Those were great days to do special trips on the NYS&W - it was fun while it lasted.
