Nostalgia & History > Toto Tuesday: A "Neanderthal" View of the Santa FeDate: 08/16/11 16:28 Toto Tuesday: A "Neanderthal" View of the Santa Fe Author: PRose Most of the locations in these views have been well documented in the
past week or two on the Western Board by fellow TO members. The difference between those recent photos and these is fourfold. A) Motive Power, obviously. B) Train Identification. Modern day BNSF Trains are now all Alpha Symbolled. Back when these photos were taken, Santa Fe Trains were numbered. I always loved Trains when they were numbered. This came from my love of the old KP, as even when most of the UP had gone to Alpha symbols, KP trains still ran with train numbers. C) Crews. When you figure that the time span of the recent posts of 2011 and these humble offerings is 29 years, one can figure that most of the crews on the trains in my photos have probably retired. However, the friendliness of midwestern crews has not changed. D) Medium. The recent photos of the BNSF in the Flint Hills of Kansas on the Western Board were all taken in the "Digital Medium". These humble offerings were from an earlier time when Kodachrome was the Norm. The real tie that binds the recent photos and these humble offerings is the Lure of photographing a train in its everyday environment, traversing a beautiful landscape for a background. All photos taken on June 19, 1982. 1) Train 189 R-1 West of Matfield Green, KS. 2) Train 188 S-2 East of Matfield Green, KS. 3) Train 315 S-1 West of Matfield Green, KS. Thanks for looking and listening. But if you were a teenybopper back then well maybe 1982 is ancient. LOL

I was chipping flint in those hills just a few years later. Circa 1988. Would I still be a Neanderthal or Cro-Magnon at that later date? Lol! The big difference in the late eighties were the kodachrome units mixed in with the blue and yellow. And the beginning
of Super Fleet. Great photos and I really enjoyed revisiting the Flint Hills. Posted from iPhone Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/16/11 20:14 by Gateway97. Date: 08/16/11 17:26 Re: Toto Tuesday: A "Neanderthal" View of the Santa Fe Author: imrl Excellent set of pictures, as always, Bob!

I wish I had taken more in that area, but always seem to content myself with Emporia. I did maange to get some west of Cassoday where the old line was until it was relocated in the early 80's. For once I was thinking ahead
