Old Milwaukee Road
Author: KB5WK

I'm scanning some slides for a good rail fan buddy of mine. He has a huge slide collection and more slides then you can shake a stick at. Thought I'd share some of the work. A few from MILW.

1) MILW 27 at Iron Mountain MI on 07-30-1973

2) MILW 138 at Chicago IL on 03-09-1985

3) MILW 142 at Wood Dale IL on 04-18-1987

Oh those were the days when gas was under a buck.

Even taking inflation into account, the $0.85 price comes to about $1.65 a gallon in 2012 dollars. I wish it was even close to that amount!!!

Excellent! Love the Wood Dale shot. I bought many a tank of gas at that Checker enroute to the Milwaukee Road's Bensenville Yard. I think the shot of 138 is actually a bit south of Chicago and actually on the IHB in Calumet City. That should be the B&OCT main behind the train and the I-94 embankment in the background. And that is the cleanest shot of 27 that I recall seeing.

Between your friend's slides and youe excellent scanning, more images would certainly be a treat. "MORE, PLEASE!"

Interesting that they sent the Locotrol-equipped SD40-2s up to Iron Mountain when new. Did they run some Locotrol iron ore trains as a test?

Best regards,

Love the MIlwaukee, love the scans. And I remember pulling out of a gas station back in 1973 because they wanted 50 cents for a gallon of SuperShell, and my Charger was very picky about what it drank....

And judging by the time bomb in the Middle East, its going to go even higher.

About a month after your shot #3, I arrived in Wooddale as Assistant Regional Engineer for SOO at their office in the strip mall just the other side of Christie's restaurant. One of my first tasks was to escort teh FRA inspectors at Bensenville Yard. What a joy that was with the conditin of the yard at that time!

Thanks for the memories

Neat shots, I got that shot at Wood Dale (And a recording of them whistling for Irving Park Road and the crossing behind the photographer)many tines. The shot of MILW 138 looks like it's near Calumet Park in the IHB. Keep 'em coming.

I live pretty close to Wood Dale these days. The gas station is long gone (probably lost their shirt selling gas at $0.85/gal!) but Christie's is still there and still makes a darn good omelette.

Love the shots! Please, sir, can we have a little more?

That strip mall office was going to be the new home of SOO LIne dispatchers, too. In fact, I got hired there by then Chief Dispatcher, Dick Awe. The dispatchers never re-located there, and I wound up in Milwaukee with the great majority of them, the other offices being in Union Station and Spring Hill.

In 2030 will folks be looking back at the 2012 photos saying, "boy, I sure wish gasoline was only $3.50 today!"

Great photos and scans. Would love to see more samplings.

Jay
