Surviving SP Commute Gallery Bi-Level Coaches?
Author: rrhistorian

A recent thread on the demise of Colorado Railcar brought to mind a lingering question that I have had for a while - do any SP Commute Gallery Bi-Level Coaches still exist that are close to their original floor plan? Of course Radar Railcar (predecessor to Colorado Railcar) was successful in rebuilding many of these cars into various configurations that continue in special train service for BNSF Railway and other operators.

It looks like this may be an extinct group of cars - or at least one that is highly endangered.

Vague references have been made to one or more cars surviving in Washington.

Here are a few references -

This thread has some amazing photos of the cars on the Tillamook Branch along with a brief discussion about possible survivors:

Two cars on-site when Colorado Railcar closed were ultimately scrapped:

The Alaska Railroad seems to have retired and scrapped the cars it used into the early 2000s

The Sierra Railroad has two of them converted into dining cars

While I appreciate the participation in all forms, I would like to clarify that the purpose of this thread is to identify extant SP Commute Gallery Bi-levels that are close to their original floor plan. In other words, to find cars that still look like they do when they were operated by the SP.

Thanks!

There is one at the museum at Campo, CA. It is in Caltrain paint, not sure what the interior is like.
Also IIRC there are/were one or two in Willits CA also in Caltrain paint(I think).

The commuter cars in the recent movie "Source Code" seemed identical to the SP commuter cars I remember when I lived in Mountain View in the 70's.

If you're thinking of the one on the left when entering the facility, before the depot, it is not SP. I believe it is EX-Metra but not 100% sure. My foggy memory is seeing the car in a baby blue with (faded Red?) stripe sceme, eeer possibly silver...

Not SP. Ex-Metra, nee-CNW.
