The rear of the Starpacer leaving Fresno 1962
Author: photobob

Train 375, the Starpacer from LA and bound for the Pacific Northwest, rolls past the west end of the Fresno Yard. Caboose 1397 is coupled behind a car carrier with 1962 Buicks and past a string of Geeps ready to tie on to another westbound. Ah Fresno in the Summer, so what if it's 115 out, man was I having fun.

Thanks, Bob, for another wonderful look at
the SP so long ago. (Where did the years go?)
I always loved the name of that hot freight --
"Starpacer" -- so poetic. And no shielding
at all over those autos? Times were truly
different then.

Another photo that tells several stories all at once. Just amazing what we once had in CA with the SP.

Another great shot, and getting "the look" from the conductor.

This spot was Muscatel on the SP. There was a set out track (where the geeps are in Bob's fine photo) and a herder's shanty. Informally, this place was referred to as "Gloomy's". I never did hear what the origin of that name was.

OK. So what were you doing that got the conductor to lean out the window and look back at you? I agree w/Kent, it seems to be a recurring theme in your shots!!
