Until the Malt house closed in Cannon Falls the UP maintained an industry job at northfield, just as the CNW had for years. In May 1998 the train was running to Cannon Falls for the malt house 3 times a week and 2 days a week to Faribault. Here are some shots of the train in that time period.

first shot, leaving the Spine line at comus Jct for the Milwaukee trackage used to reach the remnant of the CGW the industries in town are on.

second shot, crossing the faribault river from city park

third shot returning to the wye for getting back to the Milwaukee line after switching industry, train is on the CGW remnant

#1 at Waterford MN on the CGW spur to Cannon Falls, just east of Northfield MN

#2 at Randolph MN passing the remining leg of the wye allowing access to the one industry here at the time

#3 after switching Cannon Falls the crew is returning in the Cannon river valley

Nice pictures. Even though I lived in the area for 20+ years I never had a enough time to get acquainted with all of the local operations. Thanks for sharing them.
