Ex-Army cars become Amtrak Baggage cars
Author: edsaalig

These two cars were ready to go to Amtrak in mid 1972. I wonder how many are still running. The last photo shows how they came to Mira Loma to be rebuilt. All three photos were taken at Mira Loma.

We use one with the 765 as our tool car.

TVRM runs one as well for concessions/souvineers.

Potomac Eagle also uses one.

Two of these cars are at Orange Empire Ry Museum in original condition. They were purchased while stored at China Lake, California, while the base still had a railroad.

Orrville Railroad Heritage Society has one for its food/souvenir car.

I remember them operating on Amtrak #50-51.

I don't recall seeing lifting lugs on 'passenger' equipment before.
Were they common? TIA!

I imagine the lifting lugs were to make it possible to lift them by dock crane onto a ship to go overseas. They were Army cars afterall. My Dad spent his time during the Vietnam war in charge of an Army Mash unit that was a hospital train of these cars in Ft. Sam Houston (San Antonio) Texas.

Some were converted to HEP cars for use with Amfleet when the standard NEC power was still ex-PRR E-8s and GG-1s.
