Santa Fe - Need Another Location Please
Author: yardclerk

Gentlemen,

A low quality photo without much background to go on. However, maybe some one will recognize this location.

Appreciate any info.

The location is the Pinole Santa Fe Station which was torn down in 1998.

I was thinking Pinole, however when I took this photo in 1960 the train order signal was semaphore style and there are a few other differences.

Not Pinole, too many tracks. Looks like two main tracks among others?

Could be Victorville but I do not see the raised freight platform on left side of station.

The structure matches the Victorville, CA depot after about 1963 when the waiting room extension was removed and the east end remodeled. Given the unpainted look of the area to the right of the bay window and the debris on the ground, the remodeling may have still been in progress when the photo was taken. In any case, the date also has to be before early 1968 when the PA's were taken off passenger assignments.

Plans for the Victorville depot in the Jan/Feb 1985 Santa Fe Modeler show the raised freight platform started 44 feet to the left of the bay window, so you wouldn't be able to see it in this photo. Photos of the depot are in these old threads:

Photos as early as 1966 show aluminum awnings over the windows on the front, but I don't know if they were easily removable or not.

So assuming that is Victorville, then the train is westbound headed for Cajon Pass and L.A....???

I though it was an eastbound train?

I was thinking where the photographer is standing.
Is now the Victorville Transit Center?

The Victorville depot was originally on the northeast side of the tracks, between the tracks and the river, but in the 1920's it was moved to the southwest side right where the Amtrak platforms are today. Compare the first photo in this thread of an eastbound at Victorville in 1967:
