A Little SP Break

One more from my collection.

Tom Lewis took this shot in Albany OR of # 11 and a extra west at Albany from the cab # 20 east in June 1964. A question has come up as to what the tall yellow building is in the center of the photo. Any ideas?

Great shot! The mainline crossover is gone but most of the other track layout is the seam of nearly so. Nice view of action at Albany's Queen Avenue crossing! But not sure of the yellow building. Scott Pirie, where are you?

I am not familiar with that area but it looks like a grain elevator, possible coaling tower.

I think it was part of the Ready Mix facility, not much coal used up there.

Not just Train 11 (the westbound overnight "Cascade" from Portland to Oakland) but First 11. What would the other section have been? An expediter? The former "Klamath" (our eastbound cab vantage point) was a slow and steady schedule for mail and express.

Very, very cool photo! We see a lot of shots of trains around TO, but two out the window of a third plays about all the trump cards! And vintage to boot. And nicely lit. And... well, Fs and PAs. With notch-it-back smoke.

Looks like the "Cascade" has three PAs and a PB (third unit). Behind that a 1960 Economy Baggage, a rebuilt prewar Articulated Chair Car, an Artic unit with its original fluting still intact, and another fluted prewar Chair (possibly one rebuilt for this train in the '50s). Wonder how many more Chairs behind; looks like heavy summer traffic.

At least the approximate location of the future shops. The yellow building is more than likely an agricultural supply (fertilizer) company, from the look of the elevators leading up to the higest part of the building.

I almost can hear...'WP detector at Queen Avenue, please clear the crossing, detector out.'

And that reminds me...there's still about a hundred yards of track behind the former beer wholesaler next to P&W's yard. Some years ago, a conductor I worked with would pickle cars to the 'beer track' just to get them off his list, while moving stuff around in the computer. Wonder if they still show there?
