thought it was the chief, i think i saw it as wee lad, not sure about seeing any hi levels, just remember up sleeper, pacific series

Typical Amtrak "Chief". The only things missing are its typical Yellowbonnet Fs--or were they only used out of Barstow?

If you read my replies to your earlier post, you would know that the train was the Amtrak Chief which only ran June-Sept in '72. The Santa Fe Grand Canyon ended as a named train in 1968. The nameless remnant lasted until Amtrak day in 1971.

The photo is excellent.

Amtrak's brief reincarnation of the Chief, westward train No. 19 had the following schedule:

Lv Albuq. 800a
Gallup 1035a
Flagstaff 1230p
Needles 440p

Thanks to all that replied. I was thinking it was called the Grand Canyon. I knew it didn't last long. I also remember that the Santa Fe wanted Amtrak to change the name of the Super Chief as it was not up to Santa Fe standards of quality service. I'll change my initial post and make note of that on my website.

there were only two passenger F's that got the yellowbonnet treatment
they also ran to Houston

There were no blue and silver "bluebonnet" cab units among the 300-class passenger F's leased to Amtrak, and only two yellow and silver "yellowbonnet" cabs, 304L and 315L, which had silver trucks, tanks, and pilots. The seven known Santa Fe bluebonnet cabs were all 325-class former passenger F's reassigned to freight-only service after Amtrak and painted before mid-1972. After mid-1972, former passenger F's redecorated for freight duties got yellowbonnet paint but with black trucks, tanks, and pilots and 325-class numbers.
