A few for "qman" from the old days
Author: Super_C

A recent post by qman (http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?11,2923987) prompted the exchange of a few private messages. Some of the experiences referred to in those posts have now prompted me to post a few images for qman...and you folks. All these pictures were taken on the former C&S in northeastern New Mexico.

#1. Train #152, led by C&S numbered SD40-2 904, is southbound (eastbound) east of Folsom, NM with Capulin Mountain in the background. Our mutual friend, Virgil Turpin, is the engineer on this April 3, 1979.

#2. 3129 East, #92, negotiates the horseshoe curve at Alps, NM on September 3, 1989.

#3. 3116 West, #261, is taken from the same location as image #2 looking in the opposite direction on the same afternoon. In the upper left corner can be seen the tracks and a signal bungalow on the opposite side of the horseshoe curve. The canyon in between the tracks is home to an enormous flock of wild turkeys that put up quite a racket in response to the squeal of wheel flanges!

Awesome! I really liked that BN "tiger-stripe" scheme.

Hey, if all it takes are a couple a PM's ta get you to post THIS kind of stuff, I'll chat a LOT more, John !!! These are GREAT, with or without turkey's !!!

UFIX = Q50, K50 or J50 trains for Houston, John. (You FIX 'em)

I just noticed that in #3, the poor guy doesn't even have ONE good unit in the consist. The Geep 50's were, to a great degree, much like the earlier SD24's as it concerns reliability.

Great stuff, nice to see the Oak Creek Horseshoe back in the day.

Best regards,
