More Oldies from Bloomington, IL
Author: glcaddis

These are slides taken in the last days of the GM&O with an abandoned line, a dead F unit, and some old switchers.

I had cousins in Normal while growing up in the 60's & early 70's. Thanks for these snippets from my childhood memory, Gene!

Shot #5 looks like a sb IC trn hitting the diamond in Normal.

That's what it is. I can't say how long it was till the IC tracks were pulled up, but it couldn't have been too long.

We lived about 4 houses from the bridge in picture #1. It sure got hit by trucks a lot.

Towards the end there wasn't a lot of train traffic on that line as they came into town from the east and tied up about 1.5 miles from here. Then they would go back the next day. Occasionally there would be a switcher run out from town to the grocer warehouse out by Veterans Parkwy, the old US 66.

I lived in Normal about 4 blocks from where the line crossed Vernon Avenue. I used to take my oldest son down to watch them switch the General Grocer warehouse. One day we were there watching and the engineer stuck his head out and asked if we wanted to ride out to Barnes with them while the switched the elevator there. It was only about a mile further east. But, it was my first and to-date, only cab ride.
