The End (pt. 2)
Author: santafe199

It's nearly midnight and this intrepid young photographer should be home in bed where all the rest of the sensible people are, keeping warm & toasty. Trouble is, he's a 24 year old railfan. So a small matter of 11 degrees above is no bother. (At least there was none of that cutting wind Kansas is so famous for.)

Witness this scene: Santa Fe waycar 999315 sits on 3 track at the end of the second 348 train to leave Argentine today. The rear end crew is aboard waiting on the Emporia switch crew to finish tacking on a head end fill. You can bet the caboose stove is going strong! Pretty soon the sound of train air releasing will be heard and the waycar will jerk into westward motion. In a few minutes it will be completely gone from sight west of Merrick, some 3 miles in the distant darkness, leaving only the yard light tower shining an 11 degree glint off the rails & code lines...

1. AT&SF caboose 999315 on train 348 W-2 in Emporia, KS on February 23, 1980.

Thanks for staying up with me!

What an excellent shot Lance. When I think back to the ten years I spent on the Joint Line, and how many times I saw this scene when boarding a train our of Denver or Pueblo, I always wish I had done a LOT more night photography. Thanks for the memories!

Thanks guys, for all of the very kind remarks! I still have the photographic instincts I had when I was 24; I just wish I still had the energy....

I did a lot of night photography around Newton and some Emporia, but never tried doing any of the freights that stopped for crew changes the; glad you did.
