I believe the 630 was a TNO unit ... #630 - This Alan Miller shot was taken @ LA on March 31, 1962 2. #6152 - photo by Alan Miller @ LA on Jan. 20, 1964 Edited 3 time(s). Note the aftercooler pipes on the radiator fan hatch. Some of these units kept their high-top F3-style fans. All kept their "squirrel cage" F3-style dynamic brake fans in the hatch just in front, whose twin rectangular vents are flush with the roof and not visible from the ground.
According to Joe Strapac's Southern Pacific Historic Diesels, Volume 10, sister unit 631 was painted in Halloween colors when it left the Shops in September of 1958. He speculated that 630, finished in July, was also painted this way, but he said "photographic evidence is lacking." Not no more! EMD began this program for SP/T&NO, but Houston continued the program after EMD completed two A-units and four B-units. Units 632-637 left Houston in Scarlet and Gray. ~ BZ Edited 1 time(s). Never understood them abandoning the black widow scheme.

Penny pinching Espee was most likely just looking for less expensive alternatives from the black widow scheme.
