SP-UP runthrough power question - early 1960s
Author: mamfahr

Hello all,

I've been wondering about the early SP-UP runthrough power arrangement via Ogden in the early 1960s. Photos & records show that the railroads exchanged power on freight trains at Ogden around that time, primarily using sets of GP9s. It appears that the runthrough power sets normally operated as far east as North Platte; not sure if they went west to Oakland or only to RV. Apparently that early agreement didn't last long, a matter of months, or a couple of years at most.

As info, a second SP-UP runthrough power agreement began around 1967 that utilized 6-axle power such as SD40s & 45s, and that's the one that endured.

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me when the early '60s runthrough agreement with the GPs began and ended, and why it ended, if that's known. Any other info on the agreement would also be appreciated as I try to learn more about it.

Thanks much,

Mark

Only seen one photo of such an agreement and the train was in the middle of NV.
