The "Lark" and a glass of beer.
Author: photobob

The "Lark" makes the final turn into San Francisco and it's just a minute or so from arriving at the Third & Townsend Station. The giant glass of beer to the right of the photo once sat on top of the Hamms Brewery . As a kid I could see it from my front window. I remember the first time they lit it up. It had a series of lights the would make it appear to be filling with beer. One of the many things in San Franciscos past that is just a memory.

I notice the train # is not displayed in the numberboards. What was the protocol (WWWWWH)for doing that?

After June, 1967 when SP discontinued train numbers in the indicator boards except commutes

I remember that Hamm's sign, really fascinating for a youngster. Did any of you guys every frequent that bar at the terminal? Can't recall the name but you can see it on photos taken of the exterior of the station. It was part of the building and I think there was an entrance from inside the terminal as well as on the street side. I never went inside but I"ll bet it was filled with SP memorabilia, and what a great place to have a beer before a trip to LA or after disembarking from the trains, long distance or commutes.

Fantastic photo of the last steps home.

Sigh. How can you miss a train the same way you miss a person?

Don't know where the Hamm's glass went to, but I did spot a couple of Doggie Diner characters along 3rd street a few years ago. I think the name has been revived by a Giants Ball Park Vendor.

You could sit at Seals Stadium ( am I that old?) and watch it pour and empty. Great to catch this kid's attention.

The bar located in the depot was "Rickeys".

Photobob - What was the date (or at least the year) of the interior photos of 3rd and Townsend?

Thanks - and great shots!

How's that song go? "You don't know what you've got till it's gone". Nice shots, thank you.

I also remember seeing the sign from Seals Stadiem. I went there every Sunday home game. Did you collect seat cushions after the game?

I remember it well Wes! That was the next best thing (maybe the best) to watching the game. Great shot BTW Bob, excellent composition.

Hamms. From the land of sky blue waters!

Don't forget the large Admiral Television neon sign at the S.F. end of the Bay Bridge. That was as much fun to watch at the Hamm's beer sign.

Pabst bought Hamm's. Miller subsequently bought Pabst and its family of beers. Miller continues to produce the Hamms brand.

Athearn produced a nice HO scale reefer lettered for Hamms.

Another nifty sign, and a question.

O.K., boy does that bring back memories. Born and raised near there. Here's the question: there was a sign, with colored neon "arcs" that turned on and off in sequence. It was for a paint company, and was ever so visible to the south when crossing the SF end of the Bay Bridge. The slogan for the sign was "Covers the world" or something like that. I remember as a little kid trying to stay awake on the return run from Grandmom's house in Berkeley for Sunday dinner.....just to see that sign go through its colored cycles.

Thanks Bob, again, for the great memories!!!
