WOW !

A hauntingly beautiful setting and I imagine impossible to duplicate today.

Looks like somebody standing on the peak nearest the tracks. Suppose an RF would have a tripod, so it must be a small, windblown, tree.

Is this location accessible by typical out of state RF's, or does one need a key?

WAF is right...that guy in the denim in the photo probably had you in his "cross hairs" !!

Back in the days when this shot was taken, railfans and ranchers got along quite well. Things went to hell badly when throngs of unruly railfans descended on Sherman Hill to chase 8444 (844) and 3985. Not only did the ranchers get pissed, all the UP access roads that used to be open to anybody were suddenly locked and off limits. We did it to ourselves, folks....and continue to do it today in less dramatic ways.

Correct, I remember the 'before' when I first started somewhat regular visits to the area (1968) and witnessed the 'after' that Super_C described.

Looks like bag, bag-dorm, five coaches (last one being an SP daylight car), lounge, diner & three sleepers

Gosh, I've only been on Sherman three times, left the County road one time to change a tire. I didn't know you guys were watching.
