BN on the Nason Creek Trestle 1980's
Author: photobob

Here's a westbound on the Nason Creek Trestle on Stevens Pass in the mid-1980's. The locomotives are 8152-6806-8096. This photo was taken after a night of beer drinking at the Igloo Tavern in Wenatchee, Wa.. I remember feeling quite a bit under the weather while taking this shot.

I always marvel at the early builders of RR bridges. How did they get down there, drill & dig the holes to then pour the bases? Such hard, difficult work--all credit and glory to them!

Not to mention figuring out exactly where to drill and dig the holes so that the bridge piers would be in the correct place and everything would be in line with the track! All before computers and lasers and aerial photos, etc. Yes, it was amazing!

Great shot Bob! Although the bridge does cross the Nason Creek, this bridge and tunnel (out of view on the left) are known as the Gaynor Trestle and Gaynor Tunnel.

Please forgive Bob, he is still suffering the effects of the beer from the night before!

My understanding was the bridge was from a project referred to as Nason Creek Line Relocation. The older thread has a reference to bridge construction photos. However it will be remembered as the bridge just past the Igloo Bar.

This is on the relocation, the original line is on a shelf just north of the bridge and a great walking trail.

Photos like this, in fair weather and in two dimensions, fail to convey the reality of gravitational force and weather conditions.

While greatly humbled by the builders of this era, those who went decades earlier into true wilderness with only timber and black powder set the bar for their creations that let all this follow.

Civil Engineering at its best in each era.

The Igloo is still there!
