Holy Cow Roger !

Any idea where Roger Puta found these cattle?  It was in August 1974.

Thanks,
Marty Bernard

That's an eastbound just west of Christie, CA on the line to Richmond.  Looks like the roadswitcher out of Richmond is switching the small graphite plant at Asbury.  The windmill and storage tank lasted until the early 2000's, when Highway 4 was four-laned through this spot.

Yes, definitely the far east of the Collier plant. The east end of Collier siding is just out of sight to the left of the photo. The track that leads off the end of the siding is called the "corral" for some reason.  The cows are still there, but did not ever remember seeing the windmill in past years.

An interesting thing was planned for this pasture about 5 years ago.  The city of Hurcules had signed a deal with "Big League Parks' to come in and build the scale model replica's of big league parks for little league games on this parcel of land. It required a huge non-refundable deposit, but the hopes were that it would generate tax revenue for nearby businesses from users of the fields. Two big problems: the land is just outside the city limits (they knew that) and the land belongs to Conoco-Phillips. It is a buffer zone adjacent to the carbon plant. they were not interested in selling. The city was on the hook for the deposit for a deal that was never going to happen. There was a big turnover in city leadership at the time.

Great shots that Roger took. I have a video of one of our Northwest trips with 3985 where I set up alongside a pasture and waited for the train. The cattle were grazing  peacefully when the train roared past. All the cows ran except one. It was so funny as you could see this cow watch every car pass as its head went back and forth. So this proves that cattle are railfans too.

There are also now two houses at the top of the ridge in the background.
