Nostalgia & History > Grande F's rolling through Boulder on the C&S 1970

With the Flatirons looming in the background, 4 D&RGW F units and a C&S SD9 lead a train through Boulder, CO, heading toward Denver. The head end of the train has just passed the C&S depot which was on the west side of the tracks. The lead unit is #5734 and the other A unit is #5574. The hopper shown is one of the usual ones carrying ore from a mine in Wyoming, to the then CF&I Steel mill in Pueblo, CO. D&RGW F's were were sometimes seen on these trains all the way up into Wyoming. Although this would not have been sugar beet harvest season, when the harvest rolled around in the fall, Grande F's (and MKT F's and UP GP's too) sometimes showed up on those trains.

I don't know if this set of power ran around for a long time but it seems I've seen countless photos of DRGW F's when leased to the C&S and almost always they had an SD9 or SD24 spliced into the consist.  Not complaining just saying I've never seen a shot of a pure set of the leased F's on the C&S
