Here are a couple ALCO RS-3 roadswitchers from the 1970's.
Image one: EL 1021 is in Marion, Ohio on July 29, 1972.
Image two: Peabody Coal 230 sits in Lynnville, Indiana on August 21, 1974.

No. 230 looks like an GN unit. They had an RS3 No. 230 with the same accessories.

That unusual "diving board" ladder up to the rad fan on the Peabody unit reminds me of GN also.

GN 229, which is on display in Schenectady (?) NY, has that odd stack, too, although the numberboards and ladders are missing.

 Like both photos.
Visited PCC Lynnville Mine in August 1980.  Then they were usung RS3 #413; uncertain of unit's heritage.

Nice shots!  the  EL shot at Marion, for the one's that fanned Marion in the day could look at the oil soaked sand and knew it was taken at Marion...

I would have agreed from looking at the picture.  The Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railway bought GN's RS3s 231 and 232 (Alco serial numbers 80500 and 80501) in 1959 and they were equipped with oscillating headlights in the same position as shown on the Peabody 230 although they didn't have the unusual ladder style of the Peabody 230 which could have been a modification made by Peabody.  The GN 231 became the SP&S 83 and the GN 232 became the SP&S 84.

However, a little searching shows the Peabody 230 to be the ex-L&N 230 with Alco serial number 80693 according to RR Picture Archives' web page at http://rrpicturearchives.net/locoPicture.aspx?id=169393.  That number does not match the serial number 80499 of the Great Northern 230 as shown at http://www.gngoat.org/roster06.jpg on Lindsay Korst's website.  The 80499 number fits right in line with the two RS3s which the SP&S acquired.

The L&N roster shown by The Diesel Shop at http://thedieselshop.us/L&Nroster.HTML agrees with the serial number 80693 for the L&N 230.
