I'm guessing the boxcab is DIC off to the right of the photo?

Box cab about 15 cars back?

Looks like an eb dead freight climbing the west side of Pipestone Pass just east of the siding at Newcomb. Next siding up the hill is Janney (pronounced "JANE-E") where the substation was.

Alan B. or professer Rob will have to guess as to why the boxcab is back there. Yes, DIC.

Keith Ardinger has a photo, in a Milwaukee Road book, showing a really wild diesel consist and the photo was taken just west of this location in 1979. A westbound came down Pipestone Pass with a MP15AC on the point followed by another MP15AC then a SD7 and a GP9.

I believe we are looking at a Dead Freight East at MP 1514 (one mile east of the east switch of Newcomb) on the west slope of Pipestone Pass.

The DIC box motor back in the train may be the Harlowton switcher returning to Harlowton after maintenance in Deer Lodge. The empty chip cars may be returning to Maudlow after being dumped at the paper mill in Schilling.

The sign behind the pointed triangular Yard Limit One Mile is a rectangular Station One Mile. I agree this is east of Pipestone pass so which stations does the timetable show as having Yard Limits?

Correction: East of Butte. These were not my normal stomping grounds.

That bright white spot on the top of the near end likely is the back up headlight and those were only on the Harlow switch engines.

Bruce was probably doing his cloud dance while waiting for the train arrival.

Al, the Butte yard limits extended from 1000 feet east of the east switch Newcomb to just west of Dawson.

Actually the Boxcab is not DIC (Dead in Consist), it's DIT (Dead in Train).
