Chinese Red on a Way Freight

CB&Q GP7 234 in Downers Grove, IL with the East-End Way Freight on July 30, 1965. She was built September 1951, became BN 1590, and was retired October 1982. Most of her cars were just transfers between Eola and Congress Park and/or Clyde.

It has MU connectors. But what was the steam generator for? Switching of passenger cars in the winter? Local passenger trains out on the prairie? Does anybody have photos of GP7s doing either?
