This was actually a fairly common practice to make it easier on dispatchers and train crews. All Westbounds were run extra.

The SP took out all second class Westward schedules in the mid 70s, and when they wanted to run a Westbound, the Westbound got wait orders on all the Eastbounds that were coming against him.

Westbounds were quite often given "right over" an Eastbound for part of the trip, plus "and wait at" a location so that the scheduled Eastbound could continue against the Westbound. This was done until the dispatcher new the train was on the move out of LA, then some more specific instructions were given, such as #832 run 2 hours 25 minutes late, or Extra West 9063 wait at Santa Susana until 901pm, Moorpark until 915pm, Oxnard until 930pm, etcetera.

Wow, never heard of them having a Timetable, never heard of the trains having numbers either. I know the SP and GN traded off operations every 5 years, anybody know who had the job for 1958?

Were there any more pages?
