CSX F-units on the WMSR - Early 1990's Author: DTWilson I believe this was a Hagerstown Museum sponsored trip that originated in Hagerstown, MD using MARC equipment. The CSX "F" units were leased to MARC at that time.... Early 1990's

The MARC F units did not have dynamic brakes. The DB hatch on the MARC units housed the cooling fan for the HEP generator engine.

The DB hatch on the > MARC units housed the cooling fan for the HEP > generator engine. Only CSX unit with dynamic brakes was #116. CSX #116 was ex Clinchfield CRR #800. It was originally built as an F3A. Subsequently, the unit was rebuilt to an F7A rating but retained the rectangular dynamic brake grids. Presently, this unit, owned by the C&O Historical Society and stored at the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer NC, is painted as C&O #8016. CSX #119 was ex Clinchfield CRR #250. This unit was originally an F7B built as NC&StL #919. Subsequently, it was renumbered L&N #1919 then L&N #723 (1). The unit was received by the Clinchfield in exchange for F7B #853 because they wanted a B Unit with a steam generator to use with their steam engine. CRR modified the unit by removing the dynamic brakes and adding additional water storage capacity. Presently, this unit is stored at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum. The MARC unit, in addition to motive power, provided HEP for the passenger cars. Obviously, it was thought three units were needed to provide sufficient motive power to get the rather lengthy consist over the road. Dynamic braking did not enter into the equation.
