CSS&SB Little Joe 803 at Michigan City -- Sept 77
Author: gcm

Coming off a little street running in Michigan City,In.
The 800's were used for freight service and lasted till 1983 (built in 1946?).
I read where they weren't referred as "Little Joe" units very often on the South Shore.
I like the reverse curve in picture 3.

Go on Google Maps and go to 893 W 11th St in Michigan City, IN and you can see that the trackage still survives. Is that trackage still electrified, and who operates it? I don't know about the Little Joe though. Great set of historic images, must've been something to have that Little Joe doing some street running!

Thanks for sharing these.

Great sequence; I've understand the South Shore crews referred to them as "800's" and not Little Joes. I had a chance to see them in 1980,
one pulling a small transfer in East Chicago and the other at the shop in Michigan City, as I recall there was a third one at the shop that was
being cannibalized for parts, it looked pretty sorry with missing wheel sets and stripped of various roof and body fixtures etc

That track is still electrified and is used by the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District's South Shore Line trains.
Freight service is provided by the Chicago South Bend and South Shore, a subsidiary of Anacostia: http://www.anacostia.com/railroads/css
The 803 is still alive and well at the Illinois Railway Museum: https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?10,3170496,3170506#3170506

Good to hear 803 survives.
Here are a couple 2013 Google shots of the same place I was at.

That is correct and if you called one a "Little Joe" in front of an old head South Shore man you were liable to be sternly corrected!

Really like all of your photos. Visited the South Shore only once, on Sunday morning 6/6/1976. The 800s were not running. Did get some interesting action photos of the passenger cars.

Rode the South Shore many times in. '57, '58 and '59 and often saw the 800s in action along the route. Also there was a bridge with a four-rail gantlet track which kind of fascinated me. I heard there was a head on accident and the bridge was rebuilt to a regular double track, am I correct?

Love those shots! It's too bad that I'm too young to have seen those out there in their natural habitat.

Does anyone have any images of current day trains moving through this location?

Great discussion and images already!

Yes, I saw the Superbird also. If all original and excellent condition its worth piles of money today!
And yes the ganlet was replaced with a two track bridge after the head-on collision killed and injured many people.
It looks like they fixed the mud pump too.
