Little loco, big industry (1969) ... all gone?
Author: valmont

I took this shot on Aug. 9, 1969 @ Buffalo, NY ... not even sure if the weeds are left now .... I have Buffalo Slag #92 listed as a GE50T, although it looks very much like a GE45T. The difference, according to some sources, is that this type of unit had an 'extra' deck plate which added weight, and accounts for the different designation. From looking at the picture, that shows up as a 'lip' in the frame just below the carbody.

Those VGN hoppers were quite a find, too! Minimal re-lettering and they didn't even paint out the original reporting marks and numbers.

Also gone: footboards and employees riding them.
Handy, but dangerous as there is no way to escape being run over if you lose your grip. Riding on the side gives you a good chance to roll into the clear.

Pretty sure that the steel mill in the background is Republic Steel which is long gone. Home to Tesla (Solar City) right now and a new building is located on this property to manufacture solar panels. Not yet up and running.
