(4-5) The Southern Crescent and The Piedmont were still operating through here.

Photo 5 shows the train board altered to reflect discontinuance of trains 5/6 between Atlanta and Charlotte. The lines for trains 3/4 have been plated over, too, as of earlier that month. 5/6 would be discontinued entirely the following year.

The Salisbury station was saved and renovated. It serves the Crescent and today's Piedmonts.

Nice shots!! Old Southern RR T&E crews were based out of Salisbury, NC and worked to and from Monroe, VA. Salisbury based brakemen worked to and from Atlanta, GA. Greenville, SC engine crews and conductors worked to and from Salisbury.

That tower is like a cathedral. I see they use it as an event center now.

Here's my shot from 09/16/1974 of SOU Train # 5, The Piedmont at Salisbury, NC. Notice just a few passenger cars then piggy back cars on the rear.

That's right, those FP7s looked grim. Two of them (including 6141 on the point) were repainted green in 1976 and three more a few years later. The rest of them stayed in "dirty tuxedo" until the end.

Nice "gritty" shot.
The Piedmont was certainly rough looking.
