Nostalgia & History > Freight Car Friday - A Mystery?Date: 05/26/17 16:39 Freight Car Friday - A Mystery? Author: TTM We found this tank car, SCCX 1524, with a tree growing around it at Stites, ID. last Sept. Stites was at the end of Camas Prarie Clearwater Sub. There was a saw mill at Stites that closed in the 1960's, then BN came in and pulled up the rails sometime in the 70's. The track now ends at Kooskia.
The tank car is setting on rails and looks to be in good shape except for the tree. Don't know the history of the car if someone bought it or it just got left behind. Any thoughts? Thanks foe looking, hope you enjoyed. Tom Date: 05/26/17 16:55 Re: Freight Car Friday - A Mystery? Author: lynnpowell Springs look compressed. Probably still full of gasoline or diesel fuel! LOL!

Next time there is a "gas war", I'll know where to go to fill up. Kent in CArmel Valley Date: 05/26/17 17:45 Re: Freight Car Friday - A Mystery? Author: wabash2800 That might be a great car for a museum or photo freight run (provided it can be put in operating condition). Perhaps there is something wrong with it (damage to the center frame?) Someone here should be able to tell us some history based on the reporting marks and car number.
Did you get a build date? Edit: After doing some limited research, it appears that SCCX is Shell Company of California. The freight car group at yahoo could probably turn up more information. Author: lnrr1066 SCCX is Shell Oil Company of Houston, TX. Looks like the road number is 1524. In both my Oct 68 and Jan 72 ORERs, this car is listed in group 1401-1543 of 8000 gallon, 80,000 lb capacity cars, and the Jan 72 ORER indicates 80 cars of the 1401-1543 group were active. Car group SCCX 1401-1543 is not listed in my Apr 74 ORER.
