Switcher Saturday - AC&Y 107
Author: refarkas

This is a small crop from a much larger High Speed Ektachrome negative that was push-processed to ASA 400.
AC&Y 107 is on an AC&Y roundhouse track in October 1969 in Akron, Ohio. Even though the AC&Y was part of the N&W, some AC&Y locomotives were still lettered for the AC&Y.

Neat. I mistakenly assumed that the ACY was all F-M.

Nope. They had 8 alcos total on the roster. Seven S2's, #101, 103-108 and a single RS1, #102. Ironically, this made up about 1/3 of the total roster, which additionally consisted of a single H15-44, #200, 8 H16-44's, #201-208, and 9 H20-44's, #500-508.

There is some interesting information to share about the Alcos. #101 and #102 were actually the AC&Y's first Diesel locomotives, being built in 1942 and 1945 as numbers D-1 and D-2 respectively. The remainder of the S2's were second hand. #103 was originally #68 on the Delray Connecting in Detroit, and the remainder came from the Nickel Plate, their #'s 1, 6, 32, 38, and 42 respectively.

Great roster shot. Terminal roads at that time provided photographers with the opportunity for some real variety.

Great shot.
Most of the pictures of AC&Y engines posted around are of the F-M variety - nice to see the Alcos.
