Southern station at Statesville,NC -- Aug 75
Author: gcm

Passing the Southern RR passenger and freight station on a Salisbury - Asheville,NC excursion.
Glancing at Google, I don't find that the station had survived.

The Asheville Special made regular runs by Statesville on four days in August 1975, those being on the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 8th, its last run.
Only special by Statesville in August 1975 was a 4501 Ferry Trip from Winston Salem to Asheville via Barber on August 24th.

This excursion was led by Southern E units from DC to Asheville (a few of us boarded the train in Salisbury)- to pick up the 4501 for the run to Knoxville for the 1975 NRHS convention.
I had to refresh my memory and finally found a Southern steam schedule for 1975.
This diesel excursion was on August 27 (or was supposed to be). The 4501 trip to Knoxville was on August 28.
It was a great convention and I'll post other pictures from it later on.

Old stations are fascinating. Those that survived often went from importance to disuse with their history forgotten.
Thankfully this was moved and survives.
Thanks for posting this.

Of course the Asheville station had been torn down long before 1975 when passenger service stopped. Southern had been using the Biltmore station, which still stands, for Asheville. Other stations between Asheville and Salisbury that still stand are Marion, Morganton, Hickory, and Old Fort. The Barber Jct station was relocated to NCTM. All things considered, a good survival rate. NCDOT did step in about 13 years ago to preserve Marion, Morganton, and Old Fort.

First, I really like your photo of the Statesville Depot in this post and your photos of the Salisbury Depot you posted on 5.22. I never took photos of those depots from quite the same perspective as you did.

I should have made some inquiries of your 5/22/17 thread:
“Southern station at Salisbury,NC -- Aug 75”
The Train Bulletin board in Photo 5 had a date of Thursday, August 28, 1975. It makes sense that the Washington - Asheville (diesel) trip operated on a Thursday; and the 4501 Asheville - Knoxville trip operated on a Friday.
The thing that really intrigues me is that two excursion cars included in your photos had gone to Asheville on the Aug 24th Winston Salem - Asheville 4501 Ferry trip; a trip I had ridden.
In your Photo 3, the third car from the left is #726 “Man O War”, the recording car. In your photo 4, the last car from the left is either the Lookout Mountain or the Missionary Ridge. #726 “Man O War”, Lookout Mountain, and Missionary Ridge had all gone to Asheville on the 24th Ferry trip.
Thus my question becomes were the cars just deadheaded back to Salisbury or were they deadheaded all the way back to Washington?
