Nostalgia & History > Two from El Paso 10/84Date: 06/24/17 13:21 Two from El Paso 10/84 Author: callum_out Little obscure but of interest. First is the PCC "barn" which held the remaining PCC cars that ran on the El
Paso street lines. The trackage into the building, the switches in the street and of course the cars were all still there, looking like they were awaiting their next call. The second shot is a bit North. the deadline at Border Steel Mills, a large scale scrapper. The facility ended up with some ex-SP 4 axle FMs out of the Bay Area to join the interesting looking deadline in the shot. The unit lettered for MPI (Metal Processing Industries) on the far end of that lineup is ex-ATSF 560, now at Orange Empire. I've heard that Border Steel got ex-ATSF 557, and given the blue paint peeking out where the yellow has been scraped off on the lead locomotive, I'm guessing that's it. The ACI tag is in the right place to be ATSF 557, while SP generally appears to have put the tags on the side of the hood on their H12-44's. Bob Date: 06/24/17 17:14 Re: Two from El Paso 10/84 Author: callum_out Evan I'm not sure when they got the SP unit, didn't see it, story was it was bought for parts but
was good enough to use for several years. Out Date: 06/24/17 17:43 Re: Two from El Paso 10/84 Author: miralomarail Here are 3 photo's from July 1979 , that I stopped and took, en route to Fort Sam Houston for training
At the same time, not far away The Border Steel Co, was using Ex Alco's Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 06/24/17 17:43 by miralomarail. Date: 06/24/17 20:04 Re: Two from El Paso 10/84 Author: BobP PCCs are LA Transit Lines.
... and o think rode those all the time on Vernon/Vermont Ave (V-line) Date: 06/24/17 21:32 Re: Two from El Paso 10/84 Author: wattslocal Those PCC cars in El Paso came from San Diego and are standard gauge painted in National City Lines livery. After the cars left for the long stint in the dirt at the airport, Orange Empire sent a semi truck to El Paso and gathered up as many PCC parts that could be loaded on a semi. All parts were ensconced in pigeon crap as was the entire car barn.
Years later the parts came in handy for restoring our San Diego PCC 508. Parts is parts. Watts local Date: 06/25/17 08:58 Re: Two from El Paso 10/84 Author: PHall BobP Wrote:
