A load is a load is a load
Author: Bob3985

While pulling slides to scan for possible UPHS calendar shots I decided to scan some of my other slides to post on here.
So here are three photos of unique loads that I captured rolling thru Cheyenne over the years.

1. A number of flat cars loaded with self propelled Howitzers. Taken in October 1980.
2. This was on an eastbound at west Cheyenne and appear to be old ladles going to scrap, possibly from Kennecott Copper. March 1986
3. This was a westbound train evidently headed for the Northwest with this unique load of the rear portion of a submarine.
possibly bound for the Navy nuke school in Idaho. August 1987

Never know what you might see one day.

I've seen lots of flat car loads (and lots more photos) but the submarine section is one for the books.

I didn't realize submarines were that small. Can't be more than 12 feet wide?

Neat photos and information---America's railroads certainly haul it all.

Bob - do you have a date for Photo 2 with the ladles?

That was taken in March of 1986. I went back and dated all three photos. As for the rear portion of the sub, I believe this was from an early submarine being sent out to set up for training.

The Navy tests scaled down versions at the Idaho location.

The first picture shows M-109A3 155mm Self Propelled Howitzers, NOT tanks.

I sort of knew they were not tanks but didn't know what else to call a vehicle with cannons on it. Thanks for clarifying it for me.
